Seafood Watch creates recommendations for popular seafood items, both imported and domestic, sold in stores and restaurants in the U.S. The Seafood Watch research team compiles information about each seafood item and evaluates it using our sustainability criteria. For each item, a report is completed and circulated to outside experts who review and critique our findings. At the conclusion of this process, a final seafood report and recommendation are completed and posted on our website, www.seafoodwatch.org.
Choose seafood marked "Best Choice" whenever possible as these are abundant, well managed and fished or farmed in environmentally friendly ways. Select items marked "Good Alternative" less often as there are concerns about those fisheries and fish farms. Lastly, steer clear of seafood marked "Avoid" as these are overfished or fished or farmed in ways that harm other marine life or the environment.
To help us manage reports and our community, we require you to create a Monterey Bay Aquarium account before you can "Add" sustainable seafood near you. You can use an existing Monterey Bay Aquarium account, or create one directly via your phone when using the app. Personal information will be safeguarded and not shared with others for any reason. Please read our Privacy Policy for more details.
